Description
The St. Michael's Orthodox Cathedral is the first Orthodox Cathedral established in North America in 1848, when Russian explorers, hunters, trappers, and eventually missionaries, brought the Orthodox Faith to the shores of Alaska.
Regarded as the earliest Orthodox cathedral in the New World, it was built in the when Alaska was under the control of Russia, though this structure burned down in 1966. Today, it is notable as an important legacy of Russian influence in North America and Southeast Alaska in particular.
