Description
La Posada Hotel and Gardens is the restored 1930 Fred Harvey's Last Great Railroad Hotel renamed to mean 'the resting place'. The hotel is architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter's Southwest masterpiece and welcomed the stay of popular icons such as Amelia Earhart, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart.
Many of La Posada's rooms feature handmade Ponderosa pine beds, handwoven Zapotec rugs and Mexican tin, and beautiful Talavera tile mirrors. Most rooms still have the original 1930s black and white mosaic tile bathrooms, complete with six-foot cast-iron tubs, while other rooms have custom bathrooms with whirlpool tubs and hand-painted tile murals.
The original 1930 design for the hotel included plans for 12 acres of gardens, as seen with sustainable desert plant communities. Although the plan fell through then, it was revived during the restoration in 1997. La Posada now houses The Sunken Garden, the Rose and Potager Gardens on the north side, The Cottonwood Grove, and The South Lawns with walkways and a straw bale maze.
To continue Colter's vision, La Posada continues to inspire up and coming artists and craftsmen through the art exhibitions displayed at the hotel.
