Description

The Gila River Recreation Area is located along the Gila River and includes approximately five river miles on public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management. The area is open to public recreational use and features two minimally developed sites that are great for river related recreation, such as wildlife viewing, picnicking, camping, fishing and small craft river floating in a scenic Sonoran Desert canyon landscape. The area also houses the Shores and Christmas recreation sites, which offer site roads off the highway, gravel parking, toilets and primitive picnic camping units. At Gila River, there are several primitive sites with parking and fire rings. However, these sites are not suitable for large motor homes or RV trailers due to the narrow clearance and maneuvering space. The restrooms at the recreation area are wheelchair accessible, while the picnic and camping sites may have uneven ground surfaces and steep slopes that may present barriers for the mobility impaired.
