Description
The Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) is the largest satellite facility of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), which is a part of the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard & Smithsonian.
Located on Mt. Hopkins, the observatory features facilities on three different elevations, such as the 6.5-meter visible light telescope MMT (256-inch), which is a joint facility operated with the University of Arizona; the 1.5-meter Tillinghast and 1.2-meter reflector telescopes; the HAT (Hungarian-made Automated Telescope) array of four optical refractor telescopes with 200-mm lenses plus a single reflector telescope, which is used for robotic searches for variable stars and exoplanets; and the VERITAS array of four 12-m reflectors for gamma-ray astronomy in the 50GeV-50TeV energy range.

Take exit 48 off I-19 Turn left at Frontage Rd,drive approx 2 miles to Elephant Head Rd, continue onthen turn right at Mt Hopkins Rd towards Wipple Observatory. A couple miles along are a few dispersed sites along rd. Rd was paved until we turned off to Amado Montosa Rd and found a spot looking down into valley and up towards observatory.Quiet
