Description

Montezuma Well is a detached unit of the Montezuma Castle National Monument, and is a natural limestone sinkhole managed by the National Park Service. Due to its nature, visitors are reminded that the water in Montezuma Well has high levels of dissolved carbon dioxide and arsenic, which are harmful to some wildlife and may affect humans in some way. Although the chemical combination in the area prevents fish from living within the Well, it became responsible for the evolution of the five endemic species found within the Well.
