Description
Tohono Chul is a beautiful botanical garden, nature preserve and cultural museum in Casas Adobes. Translated as 'desert corner', the words Tohono Chul are borrowed from the language of the Tohono O'odham, the indigenous people of southern Arizona.
The 49-acre site offers stunning views of the Santa Catalina Mountains, which form a backdrop for the natural desert habitat. The botanical garden houses 38 species of birds that make Tohono Chul their permanent home, and another 57 migrant species that visit seasonally.
There also developed thematic displays using Tohono Chul's botanical collections, consisting primarily of plants native to the Sonoran or Chihuahuan Deserts. Admire more than 150 species of shrubs and trees, 300 species of cacti and succulents, and 50 species of wildflowers.
This botanical garden also has the largest private collection of native Night-blooming Cereus - Peniocereus greggii, and hosts 'Bloom Night' each summer, where Tohono Chul's staffs predict the greatest number of cereus flowers that will open.
