Culp Valley Campground, San Diego County, California
Description
A primitive campground in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, but with an elevation of 3, 375 feet above sea level, it is way cooler here than in the desert. The only amenity in this campground is a vault toilet. There are no trees but the boulders and bushes provide shade in the morning and afternoon.
You can hike the Culp Valley Trail from here and be rewarded with a scenic overlook of the desert at the end. Dogs are allowed on the campground but not on trails. Campfires must be contained in metal containers.
Since this is a first-come, first served free campground, it is usually at full capacity. But there are other primitive and developed campgrounds around the park.

First of all this is in a valley near the top of a mountain at over 2000 feet - quite a lot cooler than borrego springs level! Very rocky landscape of jumbled boulders and hills. Well spaced out secluded sites, very scenic. Clean pit toilets only. Superb views on drive up from borrego springs but road quite twisty. Better suited to smaller rigs
