Description

Less than three hours from San Francisco is Hendy Woods State Park, which protects two groves of towering redwoods that may be more than 300 feet tall and 1,000 years old. The park is a go-to spot for swimming in the summer, and canoeing and kayaking in late winter and early spring. It is also open year-round for camping and day use, having four cabins and 92 campsites available for reservation. The day-use area has two shaded ramadas, several picnic tables, BBQ grills, and bathroom facilities, which are all wheelchair accessible. Visitors can hike the 0.6-mile wheelchair-accessible Discovery Trail through Big Hendy Grove to see the park's finest old-growth coast redwoods, or try Big Hendy's 1.6-mile Upper Loop Trail, which includes the highlights of the Discovery Trail with the splendid old-growth trees that lie just beyond.
