Description

There are a number of boat-in/hike in camping sites around Lake Sonoma. If hiking or backpacking, be aware that the trail is well-maintained, but a roller coaster. In summer months, it can be oppressively, hot. Backpacking can start at Skaggs Springs Vista Trail, head or at South Lake trail head near Lake Sonoma marina. If starting at Skaggs Springs trail head, I recommend taking the trail on the west side of the parking lot. It is far better maintained and less treacherous than the trail on the east. Also, if you are hiking in from the, comparatively, close in Skaggs Springs Vista trailhead, know that it is a strenuous hike and, although it is only 1 mile-ish, you will not want to return to the car for more goods. Several sites at Quicksilver camp are smaller than you think. The lake Sonoma reservation system says they can accommodate eight, which, technically they can. However, it can be difficult to find flat space for more than two tents . Stunning scenery and a fantastic lake. The fact that it is boat in and backpacking accessible means there is a unique demographic cross-section of campers at these sites. The lake is active as a recreation area for skiing, wakeboarding, knee boarding, tubing, etc. Boat-in camping is a lot like car camping, except the bar for entry is owning or renting a boat. The site is therefore very interesting because it feels like a backpacking site at which there are car campers. Don't forget bug spray. Campfires allowed. There's lots of poison oak in the area.
