Description

Located on the Pacific Flyway, Gray Lodge Wildlife Area spanning 9,200 acres surrounded by agricultural flatlands and backdropped by the small but stately Sutter Buttes, the smallest mountain range in the world. Bird watching enthusiasts can perch on elevated viewing platforms to watch and photograph swirling clouds of migratory waterfowl, including numbers of snow geese, swans and sand-hill cranes. Generally reaching peak season from late October through early February, visitors usually flock the area at this time to see dramatic displays of more than a million waterfowls. Check out the 3-mile auto loop that travels through the viewing area, and the wildlife observation hides that allow visitors to observe through windows in simple structures near the seasonal ponds.
