Description

Alcatraz Island is a small island developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison, and a federal prison, which operated from 1934 until 1963. Since the late 20th century, it has become a major tourist attraction in San Francisco. The island's facilities are now managed by the National Park Service as part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and visitors are able to reach the island in fewer than 15 minutes by ferry ride from Pier 33.

Book the night tour! Very authentic, lasts about 3 hours and you have plenty of time to explore the prison by yourself. Very friendly staff which you can ask everything.

Better book in advance. Parking is bit funny in the wharf, you can park near maritime museum for 4 hours for free and rush the tour or park elsewhere for free and get a full day 5$ transportation ticket.

Interesting and very authentical experience. There is really much to see from the functioning of the prison and live of the imprisoned. The scenic view to the San Francisco is awsome.
