Description
Fort Point is a well-known masonry seacoast fortification located on the southern side of the Golden Gate. The fort was completed just before the American Civil War by the United States Army, to defend San Francisco Bay against hostile warships. Today, it is known as the Fort Point National Historic Site, a United States National Historic Site administered by the National Park Service as a unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is now popular as a tourist viewing point of the Golden Gate Bridge directly alongside it.
Fort Point National Historic Site offers park experiences that align with their COVID-19 response, including unstaffed pop-ups with temporary exhibits and displays that incorporate short historical narratives of the fort and make connections to modern day society; formal interpretive panels available on the parade ground; and Junior Ranger programs that are available onsite and virtually for visitors who wish to print a copy from home. Badges will also be available for visitors who complete their activity booklet.
