Description
This area is the only actively excavated Ice Age Fossil site in an urban location in the whole world. Tar pits have trapped ice age animals, plants, and insects from over 50,000 years ago, waiting to be discovered by scientists of today. The fossils discovered here are housed in the La Brea Tar Pit Museum. The most common large mammals from La Brea Tar Pits are dire wolves. Since 1906, more than 1 million bones of over 231 species of vertebrates have been recovered.
The museum is open from Wednesday to Monday, 9:30am to 5pm. Museum admission costs %15
