Description
Formally known as the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, this museum is a member of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The name Legion of Honor is used for both the museum collection and the building in which it is housed.
The museum displays a collection spanning more than 6,000 years of ancient and European art, as well as houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts (AFGA), which is responsible for the museum's collection of works on paper. The AFGA is currently the largest repository of works of art on paper in the western United States with over 90,000 items in the collection.
Wander through the beautiful Hall of Antiquities, which displays ancient works from Egypt, the Near East, Greece, and Rome, including sculptures, figurines, vessels, jewelry, and carved reliefs. Notable works in this hall include a 4,000-year-old carved wood figure of Seneb, an Egyptian royal scribe.
The museum also houses a representative collection of European art, with the largest portion of it being French. The most distinguished art of the collection is the sculptures by Auguste Rodin, as casts of some of his most famous works are on display, including one of The Thinker in the Court of Honor.
