Description

Take a tour of Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park and see the wonderful history of the area though guided tours and seeing historic buildings up front. Go to the visitor center and museum, which display interpretive exhibits and programs that tell the story of the gold discovery. What's fascinating about the area is about 70 percent of the town of Coloma is included in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, and there are only about 200 year-round residents in the town, so the tree-lined streets of the park are memorably quiet and serene. See the buildings that have survived from the gold rush, as well as many other reminders of that tumultuous period, such as the Gold Discovery Museum with gold-rush-era exhibits and exhibits on the Native Americans. Visitors can also go on guided walking tours, such as the Gold Discovery Tour offered at least twice a day and tells the story of the events that led up to the discovery of gold by James Marshall. Or, learn how to pan for gold with the park's 15-minute lesson, where visitors can pan through troughs of garnets, fools gold, and real gold flakes.
