Description
Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley National Park is a gigantic volcanic crater about 600 feet deep and half a mile across. It is the largest and youngest among the number of craters in the Ubehebe volcanic field. These craters are known as maar volcanoes which were created by steam and gas explosions.
The crater can be viewed from the parking lot, but for those who want to see it up close, you can walk the 1.5-mile trail along the rim to admire it from all sides. Visitors can also hike into the depth of the crater but going back-up is a challenging.
Best time to visit is during afternoon or sunset where colorful layers will be accentuated by the light.

600ft (183m) deep crater views a short walk from the car park. There is a 'moderate' loop hike around the rim. Head around counter clockwise to see Little Ubehebe Crater too. Round trip is 1.5miles/2.4 km, elevation gain 500ft/152m ( info supplied by the n.p. visitor guide)
