Description

Purgatory Flats Trail #511 is a well-known trail among hikers due to its easy access and lower elevations. The trail heads straight down a series of switchbacks through an aspen-fir forest, and crosses Purgatory Creek and opens up to Purgatory Flats area along Cascade Creek after about one mile. There are wonderful views of Spud Mountain and West Needle Mountains from this area and it is popular for overnight camping. The Purgatory Flats area is also good for bird watching, and numerous species may be spotted from spring until fall.
