Description

The El Calderon Area Trailhead is the start of a well-marked, easy to moderate difficulty hike that crosses the oldest lava flow at El Malpais National Monument. It also passes by several lava tube cave entrances on the way to the summit of a cinder cone volcano.

Cave permits required from the visitor center to enter the caves however there is a small cave to the right before Junction Cave you can enter without a permit.
