Description
The Breakers is a Gilded Age mansion built between 1893 and 1895 as a summer residence for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a member of the wealthy Vanderbilt family. It is a 70-room mansion with a gross area of 125,339 square feet, and 62,482 square feet of living area on five floors in the Renaissance Revival style.
The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994. It is also a contributing property to the Bellevue Avenue Historic District.
